The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) says there must be a swift completion of the ongoing renegotiations for the union to suspend  the nationwide strike

The Zonal Coordinator, Ibadan Zone of ASUU, Prof. Ade Adejumo who stated this at a press conference in Ibadan on Wednesday said the union is ready to suspend the strike in as much the federal government is ready to do the needful.

Correspondent Kunle Ojo reports that Adejumo, who was represented at the conference by Prof Moyo Ajao, the Chairperson ASUU University of Ilorin Chapter, said the union was forced to go on strike in March 2020 when the COVID-19 lockdown began.

He said this was done to give the Government enough room to address lingering issues.

Prof. Adejumo maintained that ASUU is on strike because of the survival of the university system where many Nigerians, including Asuu members, still have their children as students adding that the union is on the struggle in order to restore the past glory of public universities and address infrastructural decay in the country's ivory towers.

Prof. Adejumo said the interest of Nigeria and the future generations are more paramount to ASUU than the immediate gains of its members.

The union said the government agreed to inject funds to revitalize the country's universities in 2019 and it is still waiting for the fulfilment of the agreement. 

Recall that it has been seven months since ASUU embarked on the industrial action.
