FG approves new minimum wage for workers to take effect from May 1s
In the wake of the president’s prouncemrnt which heralded the removal of fuel subsidy, in May 2023, Nigerians especially workers bore the brunt of the hardship brought by that policy. And since then, there has been calls for pay increase for workers to enable them meet their domestic and personal challenges.
The approval for pay rise however a prayer well answered to the workers.
The approval which was conveyed to the public by the National Salaries, Incomes and wages commission showed that government approved 25% and 35% increase for the workers.
A look at wage increase in the last forty years showed that government increased workers salaries to N125 in 1981, N250 in 1989/90, N3, 000 in 1998/99, N5,500 and 7500 in 2000/01 as well as N18000 in 2011
Government also increased workers salaries to N30, 000 in 2018 before the current 35% increase approved on Tuesday
