IGP identifies Non-Violence Approach In Combatting Cultism
The inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has identified the non-violent approach as an effective method for curbing social vices.
Egbetokun while speaking through Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi at a community outreach in Jiwa, Abuja, decried the increasing number of youths joining dangerous cult groups, stressing the importance of understanding that cults are not social organizations but illegal assemblies. He said the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), aims to educate youths and communities about the dangers of cultism, drug abuse, and other harmful behaviors.
Egbetokun noted that the campaign target parents and mothers, just as he emphasized the role of families in preventing social vices before they escalate into serious crime.
POCACOV’s National Coordinator, CSP Olabisi Okowobi, explained that the initiative promotes a collaborative approach, recognizing that law enforcement alone cannot solve these issues.
Speaking on behalf of the Sarkin Jiwa, HRH Idris Musa, the Galadiman Jiwa, Usman Halihu, thanked the police for the outreach and noted that environmental and peer pressures often lead youths toward these groups.
He urged the government to prioritize education and community awareness, while encouraging religious leaders to continue advocating for peace.
