Emergency Rule Debate Holds In Senate

The Nigerian senate has invited the chief of defense staff Air chief Marshall Alex Badeh and the service chiefs to join in its closed door debate of President Jonathan’s request for extension of the emergency rule in the three states of the Northeast geo-political zone of the country.

The invitation formed part of the decision of red chambers during its second debate on the matter since it received the president’s request on Tuesday.

The senate had reconvened at eleven o’clock but could not commence proceedings due to late arrival of its leadership.

When they finally arrive around three minutes to noon, expectedly, leader of the senate Ndoma Egba moved a motion for them to go into a closed session to continue debate on the extension.

And when they returned they appeared divided again over the matter even though senators agreed on what transpired during the debate as announced by the senate president.

Though they agreed inside the chamber, but outside, the division became clearer as some of them sought for new strategies on how to tame insurgency against those who supported President Jonathan’s move to extend the emergency rule for the fourth time.

And for chairman of the senate committee on media and publicity, Enyinnaya Abaribe, they debate will not only continue, but it shall now involve the military authorities for a way forward.

No matter how long the debate would last, Nigerians only need postulations that will help end the trend of insurgency and terrorism in the country.
